Oesophageal Cancer Westminster Campaign

Monday 13 October 2014 is a superb opportunity to start saving significant numbers of lives. The Oesophageal Cancer Westminster Campaign is a group comprising several patient groups, including the OPA, in collaboration with clinical experts, industry and families bereaved by Oesophageal Cancer, campaigning at Westminster, through the NHS and in the media. The Campaign aims to raise awareness and work together with policy makers and politicians to increase patient survival rates through better diagnosis and patient access to treatment.

The aim is to encourage support from Parliamentarians about the significance of oesophageal cancer as an important public health issue, to emphasise the life-saving benefits of early diagnosis, and to draw attention to the opportunities that exist to diagnose, monitor and treat Barrett’s Oesophagus as an important pre-cursor condition for oesophageal adenocarcinoma that comprises 70% (or more) of the 8,300 oesophageal cancer cases in the UK.

The timetable for the day as it stands at the moment is as follows:

  • 1230 to 1330 hrs, Rally Meeting, including insight from an MP into how best to communicate with MPs
  • 1330 to 1600 hrs, mass lobby of Parliament
  • 1600 to 1800 hrs, Campaign Reception on the House of Commons Terrace
